How to Live

This morning's Writer's Almanac includes Charles Harper Webb's poem, "How to Live". The line "Have kids if you want and can afford them, but don't make them your reason-to-be." smacked me upside the head.

I don't know if I agree with Mr. Webb, but I am guilty as charged.

As I pondered this post in the shower, I think most parents make their children their reason-to-be. Yes, there are exceptions. There are negligent parents everywhere, and most of them appear on some whacko TV talk show at some point in their lives. But the normal, everyday parent - well "parent" says it all. I am a parent because of my children and I will strive to my dying breath to enable them to have the best possible life.
